Estate

Egton Estate comprises of 6,000 acres of diverse landscape.

From heather moorland and ancient woodland to winding rivers and designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). With its unrivalled setting and dramatic landscapes, Egton Estate has the unique privilege of nurturing a diverse range of habitats and species- some of which are incredibly rare and internationally protected.

Salmon & Sea Trout Fishing on the River Esk

Egton Estate offers an exceptional fishing experience with 3 miles of double bank access, including 1.25 miles available for day ticket anglers.

Our stretch of the River Esk and Murk Esk — spanning approximately 4 miles — enjoys a strong run of salmon and sea trout, particularly from late August onwards. This unspoiled river environment is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, including kingfishers, dippers, otters, and the rare freshwater pearl mussel.

Egton Estate is committed to the health and sustainability of the river. We actively support the Yorkshire Esk Rivers Trust and other conservation organizations working to combat pollution and enhance biodiversity and water quality in the region.

Woodland

Egton Estate manages around 500 acres of woodland, including ancient, amenity, and commercial areas. Much of this woodland has remained unchanged for over 400 years, with ancient woodlands still standing where they did in the 17th century.

We’re committed to restoring and protecting these spaces—replacing non-native trees with native broadleaf species and maintaining important wildlife corridors that connect habitats across the estate.

Our woodlands are actively managed through a Countryside Stewardship agreement, which includes controlling invasive species like grey squirrels, rhododendron, and laurel. We’re also responding to the impact of Ash Dieback disease, helping our woodlands adapt and stay resilient for the future.

With wonderful sites including Victorian farmhouses, cottages, and the Jacobean-style Egton Manor, the Estate offers a variety of locations for filming. We understand the pressures of weather, time and privacy and are happy to help location managers wherever needed.

Accommodation for cast and crew is available nearby.

Farming

Traditional farming and conservation go hand in hand at Egton—shaping a landscape that works for people, wildlife, and the future.

Egton Estate comprises of approximately 500 acres of farmland. Within this, approximately 30 acres are dedicated to wild bird seed crops—vital for supporting a healthy songbird population, and providing cover for game birds, roe deer, and other wildlife.

The land is managed in a mix of ways. Some areas are used seasonally for summer grazing and haymaking, while the rest is let to a long-standing local farmer who raises beef and sheep. Occasionally, smaller paddocks become available, which may be suitable for pony or small-scale sheep grazing.

We’re also passionate about conservation and the long-term health of the landscape. Where it makes sense environmentally, we plant native woodland—particularly on steeper ground. These areas help to slow water runoff, capture carbon, and improve water quality across the wider area.

Egton High Moor

Egton High Moor is an internationally rare habitat, characterised by dry heath interspersed with pockets of blanket bog. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA), it supports a rich diversity of birdlife, including several rare and important species.

Covering approximately 4,900 acres, the moor is actively managed for red grouse, as well as red-listed wading birds such as curlew and golden plover, which migrate here each spring to nest and rear their young.
Heather, with its striking purple-pink blooms, thrives in this environment. To support its regeneration and reduce wildfire risk, it is carefully cut and burnt during the winter months when the ground is damp. This traditional practice reduces surface fuel loads and plays a vital role in wildfire prevention, particularly in increasingly dry summers.

Egton Estate is also committed to environmental stewardship through regular participation in initiatives aimed at restoring blanket bog, improving water quality, and sequestering carbon.
